He focused more on the material concerns of populations all over the world. I am interested in this chapter for the following reasons:īrooks was knowledgable about the politics of not only America but many other places in the world, which as a non-American myself - I found inspiring. However, I am more interested about last chapter in the book where Brooks proposes his own vision of what type of world we should all aspire towards. I guess the longest chapter in the book is on Sam. The book goes after Sam, Peterson and Shapiro. It appears he consolidated all of his critique in the book. General critique of IDW was that they are in essence just the defenders of the status quo. and in general Sam's contribution to culture is termed toxic at worst and unhelpful at best (as a long time Sam Harris listener, of course I have problems with this characterization). His ignoring of historical context and American expansionism etc. Most criticism of Sam is pointed at his political commentary and analysis. However, I took a deep dive (on YouTube) into Michael Brooks's critique of Harris and was able to look beyond all the mockery - to find some substance (if any). Seder and Michael Brooks (who suddenly passed away in July - and author of the above-mentioned book) were very disingenuous to Sam Harris, to say the least. I am very aware that the Sam Seder gang does not get any love from people here.
